The exploration of space sets us free to dream
Pod
A pod is a place of potential that stores something for the future. It is a refuge for escape.
A seed pod is host to an embryonic plant, a sanctuary where an archive of DNA is nurtured for the chance to reproduce.
My thoughts usually begin with a very simple idea. The pod that first came to mind was a seed pod. My neighbour from times past was a keen gardener, and as a child I would reach up and carefully pick pea pods that would droop down over the fence on hot summer days. Splitting a pea pod took some skill so the perfectly formed tender row of seeds inside wouldn't skip out and scatter to the ground. The peas were sweet, and the experience ... magical.
The artwork Pod exudes an organic energy and conveys a little of that promise with its luminosity and deep, rich, Egyptian-blue light. Gentle arcs suspend its sinewed skeletal body which might be viewed of as almost alive. These thoughts lead me back to the Lunar Mission Archive, and how it will host the sum of humanity's understanding of the earth, our discoveries, creations and adventures - both personal and collective. The archive that is set to become humanity's first interplanetary pod.
